The Explorer was essential in turning the SUV from a special-interest car into one of the most popular vehiclemodels on the road. Models through 2010 were popular mid-sized SUVs, with the redesign in 2011 classifying it
as a full-sized SUV.
The Ford Explorer has also been involved in some controversy, after a series of fatal rollover accidents where the
Explorer was fitted with Firestone tires. There are both two-door Explorer Sport and four-door models. Part-time
four-wheel drive is an available feature, and since 1995 this has been a 'shift on the fly' option.
Special Service Vehicle (SSV) type is also available for security agencies and fire departments. The 2011 Ford
Explorer was named North American Truck of the Year.
